Windhoek, Namibia – 24 April 2025 – Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) wishes to inform all guests and self-drive visitors that the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism (MEFT) has introduced a temporary traffic deviation inside Etosha National Park to accommodate major road-construction works. From 23 April 2025 until November 2025, all vehicles travelling eastward from Okaukuejo toward Halali will be rerouted via Gemsbokvlakte.

Key details

Deviated route: Follow sign-posted detours from Okaukuejo to Gemsbokvlakte before re-joining the main arterial road to Halali.

Gate closure: The direct Okaukuejo–Halali section is closed for the duration of the project.

Duration: 23 April – November 2025 (subject to construction progress).

Speed limits & signs: Please observe all temporary signage and reduced speed limits.

Windhoek, Namibia – 25 February 2025 – Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) has noted recent social media claims suggesting that the company is selling or transferring ownership of 14 resorts and lodges. We would like to state that these allegations are unfounded and misleading.

NWR remains a government owned entity, and no plans exist to sell or privatise its properties. Our priority is to ensure the long term sustainability of our resorts while continuing to provide quality tourism experiences for local and international visitors.

As part of this commitment, NWR recently issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for Comprehensive Audit and Strategic Services to assess the performance of some of our facilities. This process is intended to identify opportunities for operational improvements and enhanced service delivery. It is a standard practice in responsible business management and should not be misinterpreted as a move toward privatisation. The document at hand states that the consultant can advise on a range of options, including entering into a Public Private Partnership, outsourcing or any other option. Nowhere does it state that NWR will, however, sell off these properties, apparently to Europeans.

We encourage the public and stakeholders to refer to official NWR communication channels for accurate information. Speculation and misinformation creates unnecessary uncertainty among our valued employees and the broader tourism sector.

NWR remains dedicated to transparency, and any significant developments regarding our operational strategy will be communicated through official platforms.

The late Founding Father, Dr. Sam Shafishuna Nujoma, had a profound connection with Terrace Bay, a place where he could indulge in one of his greatest passions—fishing. His last visit to the resort was in 2021. Upon arrival, he wasted no time, dropping his bags and heading straight to the water to cast his fishing line into the Atlantic waves.

A Lifelong Passion for Fishing

As the years passed and age took its toll, the Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) staff assisted him by fishing on his behalf. He would jokingly remark that he wanted the fish to be as big as the ones he would have caught himself. Despite this, Dr. Nujoma always preferred to stay near the ocean for as long as possible, observing the weather patterns and taking in the coastal environment. It often took some persuasion to convince him to leave his fishing spot.

Honoring His Presence at Terrace Bay

Dr. Nujoma’s connection with Terrace Bay was so significant that one of its houses was named after him—Tate Sam Nujoma’s House. This residence remains a popular choice among regular anglers. Additionally, his enthusiasm for fishing led to a well-known fishing spot being named in his honor: Nujoma’s Fishing Hole.

A Leader Among His People

One of the most notable aspects of his visits to Terrace Bay was his informal interactions with NWR staff and visitors. He walked around the resort freely, without security details, engaging with those around him. Resort Manager David Nekwaya recalls how he would gather the staff at the restaurant to share childhood stories. “We would remind him, ‘Tate, we have to attend to our clients now,’ but he would insist we return later, as he had more stories to share,” Nekwaya recalls. These storytelling sessions became cherished moments for those who had the opportunity to listen.

Fishing Companions and Shared Memories

Dr. Nujoma’s appreciation for Terrace Bay was not limited to personal retreats. He frequently invited close associates, including the late President Robert Mugabe, to join him on fishing trips. Their shared experiences contributed to the rich history of this special location.

Commitment to Sustainability and Community Development

Beyond fishing, Dr. Nujoma took great pride in maintaining Terrace Bay’s cleanliness and sustainability. He initiated cleaning campaigns, treating the place as his own jewel and ensuring it remained pristine for future visitors. His dedication extended beyond environmental efforts—he played a crucial role in assisting the camp with establishing Sam Nujoma Primary School, which complemented the existing clinic and police station. His vision was to create a well-rounded and sustainable community.

A Lasting Legacy

As we reflect on his passing, Dr. Nujoma’s presence at Terrace Bay will be remembered fondly. His legacy lives on in the ocean waves, the stories told by those who knew him, and the fishing lines cast into the waters of Nujoma’s Fishing Hole. His influence and love for the place will continue to be felt for generations to come.

Windhoek, Namibia – 5 November 2024 – The Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) and Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) hereby announce a collaborative journalism training program to be held at Hardap Dam Resort from November 7 to 9, 2024. This initiative, led by the NSA’s Census team, aims to proactively equip journalists with skills in understanding, accessing, and accurately reporting data, specifically focusing on census data.

Over 14 journalists from various media outlets will attend this training, covering topics including journalism’s role in data dissemination, interpreting census results, fact-checking, and storytelling with data. The program emphasises the importance of factual, data-driven reporting in empowering the public with critical information on health, education, and the economy.

NWR spokesperson Mr Nelson Ashipala highlighted how the collaboration came to be, considering that the two institutions operate in parallel industries.”For NWR, committing to journalist training on the Census in partnership with the NSA is a strategic step to support accurate, comprehensive reporting on a national initiative that directly impacts our industry and the country. By equipping journalists with the tools and knowledge needed to cover the Census effectively, we ensure that critical data around tourism, demographics, and regional development are well represented,” he said.

The training will begin with an overview of the NSA’s recent census data, followed by hands- on sessions designed to help journalists navigate and utilise data for accurate reporting.
