Von Bach Game Park is about 68 km north from Windhoek, 3.5 km south of Okahandja. The game park, which was proclaimed in 1972, covers 43 square km within the thorn-bush savanna biome. Dominant tree species are camel thorn, blue thorn, sweet thorn and ringwood tree. The dam itself is located on the outskirts of the Auas mountains and belongs to the Swakop river drainage system.
The focal point of activity is the dam, which is a popular venue for aquatic sports such as water-skiing, windsurfing, yachting and boating. It is also popular with freshwater anglers, and is stocked with blue kurper, small-mouth yellowfish and large-mouth bass. Carp and barbell also occur.
The surrounding game park can be explored on foot, where species such as Hartmann’s mountain zebra and kudu can be observed, and providing excellent opportunities for bird-watching. |
