NWR - Dolomite Camp Groundbreaking
WINDHOEK, 16 JUNE 2010: Construction begins this month on a new lodge inside Namibia’s flagship National Park, Etosha. The new product, Dolomite Camp, to be situated in the ecologically significant western part of Etosha, an area previously closed off to tourism, becomes Namibia Wildlife Resort’s 5th establishment inside Etosha and 19th overall – excluding the Camps under the Public Private Partnerships. Nestled in the dolomite outcrops of the pristine western Etosha National Park, Dolomite Camp will offer an intimate experience of one of the most scenic areas of the Park, and where previously endangered species like Black Rhino have been successfully bred. This highly anticipated product, which is expected to increase tourism traffic in and around western Etosha, Damaraland and the Great Kunene Region, will be the 3rd new tourism facility built by NWR since the implementation of the Turnaround Strategy. The NWR Board and management, and the Ministry of Environment and Tourism have over the last few months undertaken a process of comprehensive planning to determine the land-use possibility, tourism value and ecological viability of erecting a Camp in this part of the Park. Particular attention has been paid on ensuring that the building approach follows or closely mirrors the previous eco-friendly design approaches adopted at Sossus Dune Lodge and Onkoshi Camp.
A carefully selected consortium of professionals has been identified after a thorough screening process. The construction of the camp will be overseen by experienced Consulting firm Seelenbinder Consulting Engineers and the reputable Leon Barnard Architects and will consist of a spacious reception, lounge, bar and restaurant area – offering sunrise and sunset views over the surrounding savannah. From this point, a walkway will lead to thatched, en suite chalets of which two are premier chalets. The interior design will be done by the award nominated Heidrun Diekmann.
Heidrun Diekmann well known for her reflective and elaborate interior designs will be bringing her own brand of Archi-Nature to the personal side of Dolomite Camp. The Camp’s interiors will reflect some of the features of this part of the Park, characterized by dolomite rock formations, mopane, moringa and savannah woodland.
With Dolomite Camp – a facility nestled amongst the rocky dolomite outcrops, Namibia Wildlife Resorts aims to produce a profound and world class, first of its kind product inside the biodiversity-rich western part of Etosha and moreover present to its clients a wilderness experience that is unmatched in terms of privacy and landscape viewing. The Camp is expected to be complete in early 2011.
